What is a co-op game?

Published October 31, 2026

A co-op game is one where the players are on the same team and win or lose together against the game itself: enemies, a boss, a puzzle or a clock. Co-op is short for cooperative, and it covers anything from two people sharing a couch to four friends in an online squad.

What does co-op mean in gaming?

In a co-op game nobody is the opponent. You split the roles, cover each other and share one result: the mission is completed or the whole group has to restart. Some games add a small rivalry on top, like a score at the end, but the goal you are chasing is shared.

The word is used loosely, so it helps to look at who the players are fighting. If the enemy is controlled by the game, it is co-op. If the enemy is another person, it is versus.

What is the difference between co-op, multiplayer and versus?

TermWho playsWho you play against
MultiplayerTwo or more people in the same gameDepends on the game
Co-opTwo or more people on one teamThe game
VersusTwo or more people or teamsEach other

Multiplayer is the umbrella and co-op and versus sit under it. Many games have both, like a campaign you play together and a separate mode where the team splits in two. That is why a game can be listed as multiplayer and still not have a single co-op mission.

What types of co-op games are there?

Two questions sort most of them: where the players are and how the game is built.

Local co-op means everyone plays in the same room. With split screen, each player gets a part of one screen, which is how many shooters and racing games handle it. Other couch games keep everyone on one shared screen, as in Overcooked. Local co-op usually needs one copy and enough controllers, and the split screen and couch co-op games list sorts them by player count.

Online co-op puts each player on their own screen and console or PC, over the internet. Whether a PlayStation player and a PC player can share a lobby depends on crossplay.

Inside those, games differ in structure. Campaign co-op is a story you finish together, often over several evenings, and It Takes Two is built that way for exactly two players. Mission or session co-op gives you a short run you can repeat in one sitting, like Helldivers 2 or Deep Rock Galactic. Asymmetric co-op gives each player a different job, for example one reads a map or a manual while the other acts. It is not the same as asymmetric versus, where Dead by Daylight puts four survivors against one killer.

How do you know if a game is really co-op?

The store page is the quickest check, if you know which fields to read:

Where to lookWhat to read
Tags and featuresLook for "Co-op", "Online Co-op" or "Shared/Split Screen Co-op". "Multiplayer" alone doesn't say.
Player countA range like 1 to 4 means you can play alone. 2 only means two real players.
DescriptionPhrases like "play with a friend against" or "complete missions together" point to co-op. "Ranked" or "matches" usually point to versus.
Modes listA campaign or mission mode with a co-op label is what you want. A co-op mode that is only bots in a versus game is not.

Once you know what to look for, the 2 player games and 4 player games lists are a quick way to filter by group size.

What do split screen, crossplay and one-copy mean?

TermWhat it means in practice
Split screenSeveral players on one console or PC and one TV, each with their own part of the screen.
Shared screenEveryone sees the same picture, as in Overcooked, with no split.
CrossplayPlayers on different platforms can join the same session, like PS5 with PC.
Cross progressionYour saves and unlocks follow your account between platforms. It is separate from crossplay.
One copyOne person owns the game and others join for free, either locally or through a feature like Friend's Pass.

The crossplay games list shows who can join whom, and the Friend's Pass page covers which games let a friend in without buying the game.

What changes once you play co-op with other people?

The rules that look small on the store page are the ones that decide the night. Friendly fire is one: in Helldivers 2 it is always on, so your squad's grenades can hurt you, while other games let your shots pass through teammates. Difficulty is another, since many co-op games scale enemies to the number of players and a few don't, which makes a duo harder in a game balanced for four.

Progress works differently from game to game too. In some, the host keeps the story progress and guests only keep what they unlock, so it matters who creates the session. And if your friends have different amounts of time, a game with short missions lets someone leave after one without breaking the run.

Skill gaps matter less in co-op than in versus, because a stronger player can revive, carry or cover a newer one instead of beating them. Games with separate roles help more still, since each person has something to do from the first minute.

How do you choose a co-op game for your group?

Start with how many of you there will be and whether you share a room, since those two answers narrow the list the most. Two people on a couch and four on different consoles are asking for different games.

After that, decide how long an evening is. A campaign works if the same people show up each week, and short missions suit a group that changes. Then check platforms: if you are split between PS5, Xbox and PC, only games with crossplay are an option.

The co-op games finder filters the full list by those answers. If the group can't agree, make a poll, send the link and everyone votes on the same shortlist.

Frequently asked questions

What does co-op mean in gaming?

Co-op is short for cooperative: two or more people play on the same side and win or lose together against the game, its enemies or its puzzles.

Is co-op the same as multiplayer?

No. Multiplayer is any game with more than one player, and that includes games where you play against each other. Co-op is the kind of multiplayer where the players are on one team.

Can you play co-op alone?

Many co-op games have a solo mode or bots, but some are built around two real players and can't be played alone. The store page says it, usually under the player count.

Do you both need to own a co-op game?

Usually yes, each player on their own copy. A few games let one owner invite a friend for free, like Friend's Pass, and local co-op on one console needs just one copy.

Can you play co-op with someone on another console?

Only if the game has crossplay. Without it, a PS5 player and an Xbox player can't join the same session.
