What is Diablo III like?

You pick a class, such as Barbarian or Necromancer, and clear dungeons killing demons by the hundreds to find better gear. Adventure Mode has you running randomly generated rifts on ever-higher difficulties.

One of you creates a game and the others join from the friends list, dropping in or out whenever they want. Each player sees only their own loot, so nobody fights over items, and monsters get tougher with every extra player. Groups often go through the campaign first and then move to Greater Rifts, which run on a timer, and a clear inside the limit lets you upgrade Legendary Gems. Every few months a new season starts and you build fresh characters from level 1.
